  • 4 languages

Made on Lough Derg

Jetty Hop was made on Lough Derg by a local boater. It started as a guide to one lake, built around the questions you have on the water: where can we tie up tonight, is there water and shore power, where is the pub, where do we get fuel? It now covers the navigable lakes, rivers and canals of the whole island, north and south of the border: the Shannon from Lough Allen to Limerick, the Erne and the Shannon–Erne Waterway, the Grand and Royal Canals, the Barrow, Lough Neagh and the Lower Bann, and Lough Corrib.

What this guide is

  • Free, for everyone on the water: your own boat or a hire boat, first trip or fortieth.
  • For the whole island: the waterways of Ireland and Northern Ireland on one map, with their stops, moorings, locks and bridges.
  • In four languages: English, German, French and Dutch.
  • Made for use on a boat: large, clear text, and it works without signal once a waterway is saved on your phone.
  • Honest about what it knows: every stop says when it was last checked on site, or “Not yet checked on site”. Private marinas whose visitor rules we have not checked say so too.

What it is not

  • Not a chart or a navigation aid. Use the official charts, the marks on the water, Waterways Ireland’s marine notices and your hire company’s advice. Read the disclaimer.
  • Not official. We are not Waterways Ireland, a council, a hire company or a tourist board.
  • Not a booking site. We link to the businesses; we don’t sell their berths, boats or rooms.
  • Not finished. Most stops are not yet checked on site, and things change every season.

How we check information

Every stop and listing says when it was last checked on site, or says “Not yet checked on site”. When we don’t know something, we write “to be checked” instead of guessing. Opening hours, prices and services change, so please confirm locally, and tell us when something is wrong.

Where the data comes from

  • Our own notes, from local knowledge and public sources. We are starting to check the stops on site; each stop says whether it has been checked.
  • OpenStreetMap for the map, for positions we have not yet measured ourselves and for the “Nearby on OpenStreetMap” items, which are always shown apart from our own listings.
  • Met Éireann and, for Northern Ireland, the Met Office for forecasts and weather warnings.
  • The Office of Public Works (waterlevel.ie) for water levels.
  • Waterways Ireland’s marine notices: their number, date and subject, with a link to the full notice.
  • Open data from Roscommon County Council for the public moorings and slipways in County Roscommon.
  • Photos from Wikimedia Commons and Geograph, each credited. Photos that visitors share with us are added once we have checked them.

Photos and illustrations

We show real photos of real places, each credited with the photographer’s name. Where we have no photo yet, we show an illustration and label it “Illustration”. Have a good one from the water or ashore? Share it.

Sponsored listings

Local businesses can support the guide with a sponsored listing. Such listings are always labelled “Ad · Sponsored”. Mooring and safety information never depends on payment, and businesses that don’t pay keep their basic listing. How sponsorship works · How we rank listings.
