Sources and licences

The guide combines our own information with open data from public bodies, OpenStreetMap and photographers who share their work. This page lists every source with the credit its licence asks for.

Map data, positions and places nearby: OpenStreetMap

ODbL 1.0

The map and the “Nearby on OpenStreetMap” items use data from OpenStreetMap, © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License (ODbL). Our own listings and OpenStreetMap data stay in separate files. Where a stop or mooring has no position of our own yet, our map files take its point from OpenStreetMap: those features say position_source “osm” with the feature’s osm_ref, and the file carries the ODbL notice (© OpenStreetMap contributors).

© OpenStreetMap contributors · Open Database License (ODbL)

These layers are also built from OpenStreetMap data, each published apart from our own listings:

  • Positions: a stop or mooring without a GPS fix of our own takes its position from OpenStreetMap (“Position: © OpenStreetMap contributors”), shown with “Not yet checked on site”.
  • Harbours & marinas from OpenStreetMap: marinas, harbours and named piers that are not in our listings, labelled “access not checked”.
  • The route network of the trip planner: navigation lines, canals, rivers and locks, derived by Jetty Hop. Every result is an estimate, not for navigation. “Route network: © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL 1.0), derived by Jetty Hop”

Lough Derg planning line: Navigable waters © Waterways Ireland, via EPA, CC BY 4.0. Selected, clipped and adapted using OpenStreetMap lateral marks. Approaches and depths are unverified. The combined route database is distributed under ODbL 1.0. Source · CC BY 4.0

  • The waterway areas and the outlines of the offline map packs. “Areas derived from © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL)”
  • The coastline and lake outlines of the small maps on the waterway and stop pages.

The map’s “Marks & routes” layer shows navigation marks from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors), published under the Open Database License (ODbL), apart from our own listings. Marks may be incomplete or out of date and are not for navigation. No routes are drawn yet. Any route we add will be credited “Routes: Jetty Hop” and will show a typical line or a recorded track, not a safe channel or the depth.
