About Kilgarvan Quay
Kilgarvan Quay sits in a small harbour on the Tipperary shore, roughly halfway between Terryglass and Dromineer. When the Shannon still carried freight it shipped barley to Banagher and Dublin; today it is a peaceful stop for pleasure boats, with no village beside it. Most of the harbour is private, and local boaters advise asking permission before coming alongside, usually by the large green shed. Rocks lie close to the entrance, so follow the marks and carry on past them before you turn in, and expect the outer wall to be uncomfortable in some wind directions. Lough Derg Water Sports runs kayak tours, summer camps and sauna sessions from this stretch of shore, and the small Mota Quay just to the west is one of Tipperary County Council's lakeshore amenity sites. For shops, pubs and services, carry on to Terryglass or Dromineer.
