About Portumna

Portumna stands on the Galway bank where the Shannon flows into Lough Derg, and Waterways Ireland lists two public harbours. Castle Harbour lies on the lake beside the castle demesne and forest park; its 2017 upgrade doubled the berths and improved the service block and the camper-van facilities. Connacht Harbour is on the river near the swing bridge and shares its basin with Le Boat's Emerald Star hire base. The town has toilets, showers, pump-out and shore power, but no public slipway. Portumna Castle, an early 17th-century house of the de Burgo earls of Clanricarde, has formal and walled gardens, the forest park covers almost 450 hectares, and the Irish Workhouse Centre runs guided tours from March to October. Shops and pubs are about a kilometre from Castle Harbour, and the bathing place holds a Blue Flag.
