A first taste of lake cruising for couples, families and friends with a long weekend. There are no locks at all: the only thing to time is the swing bridge at Portumna, right by the Le Boat base. You spend the first night at Terryglass, barely half an hour away, cross the lake to the sailing village of Dromineer on the second day and come back up to Portumna on the third. Each crossing is about three hours of open water, so this trip needs a reasonable forecast; on a windy day the plan is simply to wait in harbour.
Good to know: This is a travel guide, not a navigation aid. Distances come from our OpenStreetMap route network, with lake crossings drawn as approximate lines; times are estimates at 7.5 km/h.

Day 1 Night 1
Portumna → Terryglass
4.1 km No locks 0.6 h under way
From Connacht Harbour you go through Portumna Bridge, whose swing span opens at set times: in summer the last openings are 18:30 from Monday to Saturday and 17:00 on Sundays. Wait on the floating jetty above the bridge. If the briefing runs late, you miss the bridge or the wind is strong, spend the night in Connacht Harbour, which is public, and leave in the morning. Below the bridge the river opens into the lake, and Terryglass harbour is only a few kilometres down the eastern shore. Tie up along the sheltered inner walls. The village, ten minutes' walk away, won the national Tidy Towns title twice, and Paddy's Bar and The Derg Inn both serve food and host music.

Day 2 Night 2
Terryglass → Dromineer
22.3 km No locks 3 h under way
A lazy morning: the harbour has a playground and a picnic and barbecue area, and the four towers of Old Court, the Marshal family's castle of 1219–1232, stand beside it (outside view only). Then comes the run south to Dromineer, about 22 km of open lake. Check the lake forecast and warnings before you leave, keep to the marked channel, and if the wind is strong, stay a second night in Terryglass and come straight back to Portumna on day 3. Dromineer's public marina has floating jetties, shore power and a pump-out, and The Whiskey Still is a few steps from the berths. Walk to the ruined tower house on the shore before dinner.

Day 3 Night 3
Dromineer → Portumna
24.4 km No locks 3.3 h under way
Before setting off, look in at the beach next to the harbour, an official bathing water, or at the yacht club, which has held regattas since 1836. The way back is about three hours on the open lake, so the weather rule applies again. Plan the last part around a bridge opening, because the base is above the span. If you arrive early, Castle Harbour on the lake is public and puts you next to Portumna Castle, an early 17th-century house of the de Burgo earls with formal and walled gardens, and the forest park. Then take the next opening through to Connacht Harbour for your last night at the base.

- Weather. Read the Met Éireann inland lakes forecast and the warnings on Today on the water before each crossing. Lough Derg is most exposed to southerly winds.
- Pump-out. Terryglass has none; Dromineer and Portumna do.
- Smart Card. Showers, pump-outs and shore power at the public harbours use a Waterways Ireland Smart Card, sold at the base.
- Busy weekends in 2027. The International 420 Munster Championship fills Dromineer from 1 to 3 May, and the Gaelforce Great Lake Swim starts and ends at Portumna on 10 July.
- Daylight. Hire boats may not cruise after dark.

Weather and timing
Distances and times are estimates for planning, not for navigation. On the big lakes the wind matters more than the distance: read the forecast every morning and stay in harbour when it blows. Lock and bridge hours change with the season.
