Public moorings on the Shannon Navigation and the Shannon–Erne Waterway: at the same public harbour for at most 5 days in a row, or 7 days in total in any month, all year round. About Portumna Bridge

Portumna Bridge carries the N65 across the Shannon about 1.5 km above the point where the river opens into Lough Derg, joining Co. Galway to Co. Tipperary. The present bridge was finished in 1911 and has a swing span over the navigation channel, which is opened only at set times. From 1 April to 30 September there are seven openings from Monday to Saturday, between 10:00 and 18:30, and six on Sundays; the timetable is a little shorter from mid-March and through October, and in winter there are only two or three openings each morning. Floating jetties above and below the bridge give you somewhere to wait, and the closed span leaves only 1.82 m at ordinary summer level (Waterways Ireland, March 2025), so most cruisers wait for an opening. The bridge can be phoned on +353 90 974 1011, and Waterways Ireland's marine notices list any changes.
