About Williamstown Harbour
Williamstown Harbour lies on the Clare shore about 3.5 km from Whitegate, looking across the lake to Dromineer. In the 1830s the Dublin Steam Packet Company built a steamer pier here and a hotel, Williamstown Lodge, which was burned in 1920 after four local men were arrested there and later shot at Killaloe; they are remembered as the Scariff Martyrs. Today the harbour is a private marina for berth holders. Shannon Sailing bought it out of receivership in 2014, and in 2025 Clare County Council gave conditional planning permission for holiday lodges, a café and shop and a new lower floating jetty. No visitor policy is published, so do not count on a berth without phoning ahead. Two more private harbours lie just to the north, and the public harbour at Dromaan, with toilets and showers, is a few minutes south by boat.
