About Mountshannon

Mountshannon was laid out around 1740 by the Limerick linen merchant Alexander Woods. Its harbour is one of the liveliest on the lake in summer, with berths along the wall and on floating jetties, shore power, pump-out, a slipway, and toilets and showers in the service block. Iniscealtra Sailing Club keeps its members' harbour next door, and a private marina sits in the next bay to the east. From April to September a local historian runs boat trips from the pier to Inis Cealtra (Holy Island), and the Inis Cealtra Visitor Experience in the restored Old Rectory sets the scene, with a café upstairs. The Blue Flag bathing area beside the harbour has lifeguards in summer. The village has pubs, a pizzeria and a café, and a petrol station with a small shop is a short walk away.
