About Kilclare Lower Lock

The Kilclare flight is the steepest part of the climb from the Shannon: three locks, numbered 11, 10 and 9 from the bottom, follow one another within a few hundred metres and lift boats to the summit level around Lough Scur. Lower Lock is the first of them for boats coming from Leitrim. Each lock is a separate passage with its own Smart Card unit, so the flight costs three units in each direction. Lock 11 itself is not part of the winter 2026–27 works, but the two locks above it close for maintenance from 2 November 2026, which cuts the through route for about three months: check the marine notices before you plan a crossing.
