About Kilclare
Kilclare marks the point where the still canal from Leitrim reaches the foot of the climb to the summit: Lisconor Lock sits by the village and the three Kilclare locks follow within a kilometre. It is a quiet place to pause before or after the flight, and a 5 km towpath walk links it with lock 16 at Killarcan. Nearby rise Sheemore and Sheebeg, two small hills said to be ancient burial sites. Their Irish names, Sí Mór and Sí Beag, mean the big and the little fairy mound, and they gave their names to “Sí Bheag, Sí Mhór”, the air usually credited to the blind harper Turlough O’Carolan as his first composition. For supplies, Waterways Ireland mentions a shop at lock 12.
