Newbrook Lock

Newbrook, lock 13, comes only a few hundred metres after Drumduff, roughly 3.5 km above Leitrim village. From here the cut keeps climbing towards Kilclare, where Lisconor Lock and then a flight of three carry the waterway up to the summit level. The lock dates from the original canal, which was finished in 1860 but saw only eight boats in its first decade before it was left to decay; it owes its second life to the restoration that reopened the line in 1994. Work it as you would the others, with one Smart Card unit, and remember that lifejackets or buoyancy aids have been compulsory in all Waterways Ireland locks since April 2026.
