About Kilclare Upper Lock

Upper Lock is the last of the eight locks that climb from the Shannon. Above it lies the summit level, a stretch of canal and lake past Lough Scur, Keshcarrigan and Lough Marrave with no further lock until Castlefore, about 7 km on. Heading west, this is where the descent to Leitrim begins. On the restored waterway the summit also marks a change of character: the eight locks behind you are repaired originals, while the eight ahead were rebuilt in concrete and faced with stone from the old locks. Lock 9 is part of the stretch that closes for maintenance from 2 November 2026 for about three months, together with locks 8 and 10.
