About Shannonbridge Bridge
The long bridge at Shannonbridge was completed in 1757 and crosses the Shannon on sixteen stone arches, with V-shaped cutwaters and refuges for walkers in its parapets; the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage counts it among the finest bridges in Ireland. A fixed reinforced-concrete span was added at the eastern, Offaly end in 1983. Napoleonic fortifications guard its western end on the Roscommon bank, where the fort now holds a free exhibition and a café. The bridge has no opening span; Waterways Ireland gives a clearance of 7.18 m at ordinary summer level (March 2025 figures, published by IWAI), less when the river is high. Follow the marks to the navigation channel and check the gauge in high water. Moorings lie on both sides of the bridge, a short walk from the village.
