About Banagher

Banagher grew up where an esker ridge made the Shannon easy to cross, and it is still a river town at heart. The marina lies just below the main street on the Offaly bank, beside the 1840s bridge; Waterways Ireland lists toilets, showers, a pump-out and a slipway here, but no shore power. Silverline Cruisers and Carrickcraft both hire out cruisers from the marina. JJ Hough’s on Main Street is known for its music, and the family-run Flynn’s has been serving the town for more than a century. Fort Eliza on the Offaly side, and Cromwell’s Castle and a Martello tower on the Galway bank, guarded the crossing in Napoleon’s time. Anthony Trollope lived here from 1841 to 1844 and began his first novel in the town. The open-water pool that floats in the river reopened in April 2026 after a rebuild, and Shannon Harbour is about 3 km upstream.
