About Shannon Harbour
Shannon Harbour was built from scratch as the trans-shipment point between the Grand Canal and the Shannon. The first trade barge arrived from Dublin in 1804; by 1820 the passenger boats took 18 hours for the journey. The roofless Grand Hotel, completed in 1806, still stands over the water. The harbour, between hump-backed Griffith Bridge and the 35th Lock, has moorings, a slipway, waste facilities and a playground, and the service block has toilets, showers and laundry. McIntyre’s is a family-run pub with outdoor seating and food at weekends, and The Harbour Master’s House is a Georgian B&B on the bank. Clonony Castle, a 15th-century tower house, is about 2.5 km away, and the IWAI Shannon Harbour rally has gathered boats here every year since 1971, lately in June.
