About Kilrea
Kilrea is a market village built around the Diamond, a short walk from the river; in the Plantation the Mercers' Company of London ran its estate here from nearby Movanagher. Boats stop at the jetty at Portneal, by Kilrea Bridge, where Waterways Ireland lists drinking water and canoe steps. The village has shops, the Talk of the Town pub and, in summer, the revived Fairy Thorn Festival, with music, a funfair and sports. The Lake Kilrea, a spring-fed lake on the edge of the village, has an 80,000 sq ft inflatable water park with lifeguards for anyone aged six and up. Anglers fish the Bann here, and the short Fishing Lodge Walk loops round an old lodge where otters are sometimes seen. The Lower Bann Cycleway passes through, and The Manor House golf club is nearby.
