Carnroe Lock

Carnroe is the fourth of the Lower Bann’s five locks and lies less than 2 km below Movanagher. The two locks share one keeper, on +44 28 2954 0570, so phone ahead; the fee is £1 a lock, or 50p each when boats share, and like every Bann lock it shuts over the lunch hour. There is little ashore here: Waterways Ireland lists toilets and canoe steps. The nearest full set of services is at Drumaheglis Marina, 8 km downstream, with water, showers, a laundry and a pump-out. Waterways Ireland names Carnroe among the locks where approaching can be risky in spate, when strong currents and eddies form, so after heavy rain call the keeper first and take it slowly.
