About The Cutts Lock

The Cutts lock and its big flood gates sit at the head of the tide, about 2 km above Coleraine. The lock-keeper is on +44 28 7034 2999, and Waterways Ireland asks skippers of deep-draught boats to call its operations office in Coleraine (+44 28 7034 4342) before travelling. This is the trickiest lock on the river in a flood: when DfI Rivers opens the gates wide, the reach above can fall sharply and the current near the entrance runs hard, so approach slowly and talk to the keeper first. Waterways Ireland lists toilets, showers, water and canoe steps. Just downstream, Mountsandel Wood holds one of the oldest known settlements in Ireland, where hunters camped to catch salmon between 7900 and 7600 BC; a large earthwork fort, probably Anglo-Norman, overlooks the river, and a small jetty lets boats stop for a visit.
