About Hazelhatch
Hazelhatch is less a village than a meeting point: a road bridge over the canal on the way to Celbridge, a single pub beside the water and Hazelhatch & Celbridge station, opened on the main line out of Dublin in 1846. That railway makes it one of the easiest places on the canal to swap crew or meet friends. IWAI Kildare counts Hazelhatch among the canal’s boating communities, so expect a line of moored boats along the bank and pass them slowly. The spot has served canal travellers for a long time: in 1790 the Grand Canal Company named Hazelhatch as the first stage for the horses drawing its passage boats out of Dublin. Walkers on the Grand Canal Way pass through on the way to Sallins.
