About Baggot Street Bridge

Between Baggot Street Bridge and Leeson Street Bridge the Circular Line shows Dublin at its most Georgian. The poet Patrick Kavanagh found his later voice while recovering on these banks after a lung operation; a bronze statue of him sits on a bench by the water, and in 1968 his friends put up a memorial seat on Mespil Road, where they still meet after the St Patrick’s Day parade. Two old barges moor along Mespil Road as floating restaurants: La Peniche, a restored cargo barge, and Barge Cadhla, a replica of a Guinness canal barge. Both run dining cruises that work through the hand-cranked locks. Passage through the city locks is by arrangement only, so most visitors enjoy this reach from the towpath or from a barge table. La Touche Bridge at Portobello is about 1.4 km further west.
