About Lanesborough & Ballyleague
Lanesborough, in County Longford, and Ballyleague, in County Roscommon, face each other across the Shannon where it leaves the northern tip of the lake. Their Irish name, Béal Átha Liag, recalls the ford of flagstones that came before the bridge. The public harbour, built by Waterways Ireland, is on the Ballyleague (Roscommon) bank; Waterways Ireland lists a pump-out and slipway on that side and toilets and showers on the Lanesborough side. Hanley's, by the bridge, is a secure private marina with holiday apartments. The Lough Ree Access for All boat, with a ramp for wheelchair users, runs 90-minute cruises from the North Quay. Clarke's on the main street has Irish music three nights a week in summer, Lough Ree Distillery on Main Street offers tours and tastings, and the Commons Woodland Trail and a looped bog walk start close by. The village is a well-known angling centre.
