About Castle Archdale
The Archdale family built a castle here in 1615 and a mansion in 1773. In the Second World War the estate became RAF Castle Archdale, home to up to 2,500 people and to the Catalina and Sunderland flying boats that guarded Atlantic convoys; two of its Catalinas helped find the Bismarck in 1941. Today the country park has woodland and lakeshore trails, a small war museum in the old courtyard, and a large holiday park with a shop, chippy, restaurant and bar, open at weekends from April to June and in September, and daily in July and August. The marina is privately run and has only limited room for visiting boats, so ask first; there is a pump-out and a public slipway, and day boats, kayaks and hydrobikes are for hire beside the car park. A quieter forest jetty lies further north, and a seasonal ferry crosses to White Island.
