About Coosan Point
Coosan Point is the green headland where Athlone's inner lakes open onto Lough Ree, facing Killinure Point across a channel only about 200 m wide. It is a public amenity area with parking, paths and a jetty, and Waterways Ireland lists toilets, showers and a slipway here, but no pump-out or shore power. The RNLI's Lough Ree lifeboat has been based at the point since 2012; its permanent station, built on a site given by the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland, saw its first launch in April 2022. Local swimmers use the jetty in summer, although this is not a monitored bathing water, and the shore is a protected area for birds. Westmeath County Council consulted on a masterplan for the site in May 2026, so expect changes.
