About Lough Ree Yacht Club

Lough Ree Yacht Club began as Athlone Yacht Club in 1770 and took its present name in 1895, which makes it, by its own account, the second-oldest sailing club in the world. Its clubhouse at Ballyglass in Coosan, on the lake shore just north of Athlone, has fixed and floating jetties. These are for members: under the club's rules even its social and crew members may berth only by special arrangement with the sailing secretary, so ask before you come alongside. From the water it is worth a look for the racing. Keelboats race roughly every second week from April to October, there is a short race on Wednesday evenings, and the club regatta takes over in August. The club also runs sailing courses for adults and juniors.
