About Athlone

Athlone grew up around the river crossing that its castle was built to guard in 1210, and the town still meets the Shannon head-on. Boats tie up above the weir, between the Town Bridge and the railway bridge. The council-run marina, reached from Abbey Road, has about 60 berths behind a coded gate, with showers and electricity cards; on the west bank a free public jetty beside Athlone Boat Club works under the usual five-day rule. Waterways Ireland lists toilets, showers, a pump-out and a slipway in the town. Sean's Bar, given a Guinness World Records certificate as Ireland's oldest pub in 2004, is a few steps from the castle quay, and the Left Bank quarter around it is full of places to eat. Viking Tours sail from the quay to Lough Ree and Clonmacnoise, and the Old Rail Trail greenway runs 42 km east to Mullingar.
