About Mary O'Rourke Bridge
This 104 m bridge for walkers and cyclists opened in August 2023 as part of the Galway to Dublin greenway, linking the two halves of Athlone just above the Town Bridge. It was later named after Mary O'Rourke, the former government minister from Athlone, who died in 2024. For boats it is a fixed span: the IWAI's table of Waterways Ireland figures gives 5.48 m of clearance at ordinary summer level, a little more than the Town Bridge beside it, and a wide 30 m opening. In June 2026 a first 27 km stretch of a new greenway from here south to Shannonbridge was approved.
