The only lifting bridge that carries a main road over the Grand Canal, right beside the Barrow aqueduct; boats need Waterways Ireland staff to raise it.

About Monasterevin Lift Bridge
Where the R424 crosses the Barrow Line at Bell Harbour, the road runs over a bascule bridge that has to be raised for boats, and immediately beyond it the canal crosses the River Barrow on the aqueduct of 1826. You cannot work the bridge yourself: arrange the lift in advance with the Waterways Ireland patroller for Locks 24 to 26 on +353 87 247 3093. The bridge has been out of action at times because of faults and road works, so check the marine notices before relying on it. Its old overhead gear was removed years ago, but gliding under the raised deck and straight out across the aqueduct is still one of the highlights of the Barrow Line. Bell Harbour, with the shops and pubs of Monasterevin, is only a few steps away, and the 25th lock lies a short way south.
