Salmon Weir Bridge

The bridge at the foot of the navigation in Galway city: the weir beside it controls the lake's level, and boats go no further downstream.

About Salmon Weir Bridge

Salmon Weir Bridge opened in 1819 to join Galway's new courthouse to the new gaol on Nun's Island, whose site Galway Cathedral now occupies. For boats it is the end of the line. The salmon weir beside it, first built of stone and timber, now works mostly through fourteen steel gates; two of the old gates remain and are opened only in floods. The OPW manages the lake's level and lets water out to sea through these gates, and its Galway Barrage gauge records the level just upstream. Below the weir the river races to the sea, and the old way round through the Eglinton Canal has been closed to boats since the 1930s. Keep well clear of the weir and stop at Woodquay, just upstream. A footbridge for walkers and cyclists, Droichead an Dóchais, was completed alongside in 2023.
