About Roosky Bridge

Built in 1845 to a design by Thomas Rhodes for the Shannon Commissioners, Roosky’s road bridge received an automatic lifting span in 1968 in place of its original swivel section. With the span down there is about 3.0 m of headroom at ordinary summer level (10 ft in a 2019 notice; a 2025 table says 3.30 m, so plan with the lower figure), shown on air-draft gauges on both approaches. Anything taller must wait for the Roosky lock-keeper, who lifts the span while the lock is manned. There is no timetable: the keeper looks out for waiting boats now and then, takes lunch from 13:00 to 14:00, and answers +353 71 963 8018. The village quay is right beside the bridge, so many crews simply tie up and walk across. In the Second World War the bridge was readied for demolition; the pillbox built for the charges still stands nearby.
