Notice: Status not confirmed: Waterways Ireland closed the bridge on 16 Oct 2026 after a fault in the lifting gear (Marine Notice 114/2026) and took that notice off its list of live notices on 23 Oct 2026 without announcing a reopening. Ask the Tarmonbarry lock-keeper (+353 87 922 2020 or +353 43 332 6117) whether it lifts before you rely on it. When working: lifted during Shannon lock hours, no fixed times, not 13:00–14:00. Lowered, about 2.35 m headroom at ordinary summer level; the way round is the Camlin River and Clondra Canal (3.20 m under the N5).

About Tarmonbarry Bridge

The bridge that carries the N5 over the Shannon at Tarmonbarry has a lifting span above the navigation channel. Lowered, it leaves about 2.35 m of headroom at ordinary summer level (Waterways Ireland notices of 2013 and 2019); a 2025 table gives 5.10 m without saying whether the span is raised, so we keep the lower figure. Taller boats need a lift from the Tarmonbarry lock-keeper in lock hours: no fixed times, nothing between 13:00 and 14:00. On 16 October 2026 Waterways Ireland closed the bridge until further notice after an electrical fault in the lifting gear (Marine Notice 114/2026) and withdrew the notice on 23 October without word of a reopening: ask the lock-keeper (+353 87 922 2020). The way round is the Camlin River and the Clondra Canal, from Corlehan Point to below Tarmonbarry, under bridges of 3.20 m (N5) and 3.50 m (L1171): check your air draft first. The same detour served in 2021 and 2024. Read the marine notices before planning this passage.
