About Cloondara Lock (Camlin)

Cloondara Lock belongs not to the Royal Canal but to the Shannon navigation. Below Lock 46, boats turn up the Camlin River away from the weir and then into the short Cloondara Canal, whose lock lets them out onto the Shannon opposite Tarmonbarry. First built around 1760 and altered around 1815 when the Royal Canal arrived, it is worked by the Tarmonbarry lock-keeper during Shannon lock hours, for 2 Smart Card units or €1.50 a passage, with a lunch break from 13:00 to 14:00. The chamber is 5.75 m wide, much narrower than the main Shannon locks. When a fault closed Tarmonbarry's lifting bridge in October 2026, Waterways Ireland named this route via the Camlin as the alternative; check the marine notices for the current position, and judge for yourself whether the route suits your boat.
