About Tarmonbarry Lock

Tarmonbarry Lock lifts boats from the Lanesborough reach towards Lough Forbes, Roosky and Carrick. Like the other upper Shannon locks it is about 31 m long and 9 m wide, and it is worked by a Waterways Ireland lock-keeper, who also looks after Cloondara Lock on the Camlin route: call +353 87 922 2020 or +353 43 332 6117. A passage costs 2 Smart Card units or €1.50, and everyone handling lines must wear a lifejacket or buoyancy aid. Hours follow the Shannon timetable, with a lunch break from 13:00 to 14:00. Just upstream, the lifting road bridge was closed by a fault on 16 October 2026 and Waterways Ireland pointed boats to the Camlin River and Clondra Canal; the notice was withdrawn on 23 October without word of a reopening, so ask the lock-keeper and check the marine notices first. Keep well clear of the weir beside the lock.
