About Carrick-on-Shannon
Carrick-on-Shannon, a chartered borough since 1607 and Leitrim’s county town, is often called the marina capital of Ireland. Le Boat, which also trades as Emerald Star, and Carrickcraft, whose first marina opened here in 1970, both run their bases from the town marina. Visiting boats use the town quay and the floating moorings along the riverside boardwalk, and the Waterways Ireland service block has toilets, showers, a pump-out, shore power and a slipway. The 1846 bridge leads across to Cortober on the Roscommon bank, where the station has trains to Dublin and Sligo. Ashore are supermarkets, a Thursday farmers’ market, pubs with music and several of the county’s award-winning restaurants. Look into the tiny Costello Memorial Chapel and The Dock arts centre in the old courthouse, and expect crowds for the summer rowing regatta and the June carnival.
