About Tirmactiernan Lock

Tirmactiernan is the second lock out of Leitrim, about 1.5 km from the village on the canalised Leitrim River. The water here is normally still, but the Blueway paddling guide warns that the back channel beside lock 15 can run fast when levels are high or after a flash flood, so come in slowly with the boat under control and keep children away from the edge while you tie up. Beyond the lock the cut climbs on through quiet farmland to Drumduff and Newbrook, two locks that come close together. The console works like every other one on the waterway: insert the Smart Card and follow the steps shown on the panel.
