About Roosky Lock
Roosky Lock and its lock-keeper’s house date from about 1840, when the Shannon Commissioners rebuilt the navigation through the village. The lock lies some 700 m below the village quay and lifts boats from the Lough Forbes reach into the long level that runs past Dromod and across Loughs Bofin and Boderg to Albert Lock. A Waterways Ireland lock-keeper works it during Shannon lock hours, with a break from 13:00 to 14:00; call +353 71 963 8018. A passage costs 2 Smart Card units or €1.50, and lifejackets or buoyancy aids are compulsory in the lock and on its walls. The same keeper lifts Roosky’s road bridge, so say if you need it raised. Keep away from the weir. A flat 1.4 km trail links the lock with the village, and the old 18th-century bypass canal nearby can be walked on a short loop.
