About Begnagh Lifting Bridge

On Begnagh Bog, a few kilometres before Clondra, the road from Killashee to Cloondara crosses the canal on a lifting bridge, beside the old stone Begnagh Bridge. It is designed to work by itself: an approaching boat triggers sensors that lower the road barriers and raise the deck. The mechanism has given trouble, though. In spring 2022 Waterways Ireland could only open it by hand on six set dates, with two days' notice to the Clondra water patroller, and getting the automation back is still on the IWAI's list. Do not count on the sensors: phone the water patroller on +353 87 915 1400 before you set out. About 1.5 km further on, a second lifting bridge carries Bord na Móna's narrow-gauge bog railway over the canal, and Lock 45 at Rinnmount comes just before the village.
