About Robertstown

Robertstown was laid out along the canal after it arrived in 1784, on the summit level 85 m above sea level: a row of cottages, a shop and, from 1801, the imposing Grand Canal Hotel for passengers travelling on to Dublin, Waterford and Galway. The hotel closed in 1849, became a constabulary barracks and later a community centre, and it still dominates the waterfront. In the 1960s and 1970s the village’s Canal Festas drew big crowds, and today the community is restoring the trading barge 52M, built in 1928. Boats moor in the village harbour, and there is a public slipway. Robertstown Holiday Village lets self-catering cottages. Lowtown, the junction with the Barrow Line, is just over 1 km west, and the Barrow Way meets the Grand Canal Way here.
