About Leighlinbridge
Leighlinbridge, said “Lock-lin-bridge”, grew up around a strategic crossing of the Barrow. Its bridge, said to have been built in 1320 by a canon of Kildare and known for the valerian growing from its stones, is one of the oldest still in use in Europe; beside it rises the ruined Black Castle, on the site of a Norman fort built to guard the crossing. Waterways Ireland invites boaters to moor here, and the Lord Bagenal Inn, a family-run hotel and restaurant on the bank since 1979, has its own harbour alongside. The village has won the national Tidy Towns award and has pubs, restaurants and B&Bs. The physicist John Tyndall and Captain Myles Keogh, who died with Custer at the Little Bighorn, were both born here. A 3 km towpath walk leads downstream to Bagenalstown.
