About Carlow

Carlow has guarded this crossing of the Barrow since William Marshal built his castle on the east bank in the early 1200s. Two of its towers and the west wall survive, left standing when an attempt in 1814 to turn it into an asylum with explosives went badly wrong. The old Graiguecullen Bridge, first built in 1569 and the lowest on the whole navigation, links the town with Graiguecullen on the west bank, where Waterways Ireland lists a public slipway at the town park. Carlow Lock lies just downstream of the bridge. In town, the County Museum, the VISUAL arts centre and the cathedral of 1833 are all within walking distance, with every kind of shop and restaurant. Brownshill Dolmen, whose capstone is said to be the heaviest in Europe, lies 3 km to the east. The OPW gauge just below Carlow Lock shows how this reach is running.
