About Toome Lock

Toome Lock sits on the short Toome Canal between Lough Neagh and the Lower Bann, at kilometre zero of the river navigation. Beside it are the gates DfI Rivers uses to keep the lough between 12.45 and 12.60 m above Ordnance Datum; when heavy rain is on the way they are opened wide in advance, and the river below can then run hard. A lock-keeper works the lock for £1 a passage, or 50p each when boats share: ring +44 77 9953 3891 before you arrive. Opening hours change with the season, and the lock closes for lunch from 13:00 to 14:00. Waterways Ireland lists toilets, water, a slipway and canoe steps here. Heading out onto the lough, the canal entrance is where the numbered Lough Neagh marks begin, running clockwise from No. 1.
