About Toome

Toome, or Toomebridge, grew up at the bridge where the Lower Bann leaves Lough Neagh, and since its bypass opened in 2004 it has been a quiet place to stop. Boats tie up at the jetty on the Toome Canal below the lock, where River Bann Tours also starts its 'Lock to Lough' trip out onto the lake. A path along the canal runs about 2 km to the lough shore. The Lough Neagh Fishermen's Co-operative, founded in 1965, runs the largest wild eel fishery in Europe from Toome, and its visitor centre tells the eel's story from the Sargasso Sea onwards (tours by booking). In the village are Gran's Cafe, Ben's Ice Cream Studio and the O'Neill Arms Country House, known for its Sunday dinners and offering rooms. Roddy McCorley, the United Irishman, was hanged near the old bridge in 1800.
