About Sarsfield Lock

Sarsfield Lock was built around 1820 to Alexander Nimmo’s design, between Wellesley Pier and Honan’s Quay, and now has steel gates at both ends. Beside it, Sarsfield Bridge opened in 1835 as Wellesley Bridge; its swing span no longer moves, so the lock is the way through. A low weir across the river nearby keeps water in the city reach, and the lock passes boats between that reach and the tidal estuary. It works only in season and to the tide: in 2026 from 13 March to 31 October, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, in a three-hour window around mid-tide. Book at least 24 hours ahead with the lock-keeper (+353 87 797 2998); each year’s timetable appears as a marine notice, and lifejackets are compulsory in the lock. Two old rowing clubs flank the bridge on Shannon Island: Shannon Rowing Club (1866) and Limerick Boat Club (1870).
