About Parteen

Parteen sits on the Clare side just north of Limerick city, within sight of the power station. Do not confuse it with Parteen Weir, some 12 km upstream: the village was itself called Ardnacrusha until the station took that name, and its people then chose Parteen. Below the lock, boats run down the tailrace past the village and rejoin the old Shannon near Corbally. The current here follows the number of turbines running, and more may be switched on while you are under way, so keep a good reserve of power. We know of no public mooring here. Ashore the village has a church, three pubs, a school and a shop, and on its edge stands Quinsborough House, built in 1767. Drivers cross into Limerick on Athlunkard Bridge, a five-arch limestone bridge whose old toll house still stands on the city side.
