About Thomastown Harbour (Killucan)

Thomastown Harbour, about a kilometre south of Killucan, sits at the end of the long level from Ferns Lock and at the start of the climb to the summit. The Killucan flight lifts the canal through eight locks in about 2 km here, so allow two to three hours of steady work with the lock key, more if you meet boats coming down. Waterways Ireland lists a slipway at the harbour. Nanny Quinn's, a traditional pub right on the greenway by Thomastown Bridge, is the place to celebrate afterwards; it is often busy, so ring ahead for a table. Cunningham's, a pub popular with locals, is about 2 km further west at Riverstown Bridge, and Killucan village lies a few kilometres to the north. Above the flight the canal reaches its summit level, with no more locks until Coolnahay beyond Mullingar.
