About Coolnahay Harbour (Lock 26)
Coolnahay Harbour lies on the summit level just above Lock 26, beside Coolnahay (Dolan) Bridge, about 11 km beyond Mullingar; Waterways Ireland also mentions a small jetty on the west side of the lock. Lock 26 is the first of the 21 locks that take the canal down from the summit level to the Shannon, so it is a natural place to pause before the descent. The small limestone harbour has a jetty, parking, public toilets and bike hire, and the restored lock-keeper's cottage now houses the Lock 26 Coffee House, for a coffee and a sandwich at weekends. Camping is allowed on the far side of the lock, and paddlers on the blueway from Mullingar often make Coolnahay their goal for the day. Below the harbour, locks 27 to 34 follow one another through quiet farmland on the way to Ballynacargy.
