About Ballybrannigan Harbour (Ballymahon)
Ballybrannigan Harbour opens out from the canal at Chaigneau Bridge, just north of Ballymahon, and is one of the larger basins on the western half of the Royal, with boats often moored. The ivy-covered ruin of the old canal store and a restored ticket office stand by the water, and a plaque records the restoration of the harbour by the Royal Canal Amenity Group and the Office of Public Works in 1995. Ballymahon, one to two kilometres away on the River Inny, has a broad Georgian main street with pubs, shops and a supermarket, and plenty of independent places to eat thanks to Center Parcs Longford Forest nearby. The Bog Lane Theatre stages plays, and electric bikes can be hired in the town. When the IWAI cruised here in company in 2024, nine boats fitted easily and the crews lunched at Skelly's Bar.
