About McNead's Bridge

McNead's Bridge, also called Knead's Bridge, carries the old Dublin–Sligo road over the canal on the summit level east of Mullingar. Waterways Ireland has a small amenity jetty here for passing boats, and there is plenty of parking at the crossing, handy if friends are meeting the boat by car. Mary Lynch's, the famous pub at the bridge, is the landmark everyone uses for the spot and a natural lunch stop; paddlers on the blueway from Mullingar often make it their turning point. Mullingar Harbour is about 11 km further west. On the way, at The Downs, the listed hand-operated lifting bridge that had been taken out was restored and put back by Waterways Ireland in spring 2024, one of the goals the IWAI had campaigned for.
