About Daingean

Daingean was Philipstown, the county town of King’s County, from 1556 until Tullamore took over in 1835, and its courthouse is locally attributed to James Gandon. The canal opened to Philipstown in 1797, but breaches in the bog embankments forced a change of method, and boats only reached the Shannon in 1804. Today the canal passes right through the village, and anglers use the local fishing platform. The week-long Daingean Homecoming Festival in early August includes a raft race on the canal, and the trails of the Mount Lucas wind farm are a short drive away. Mooring arrangements here have not yet been checked by us.
