About Spencer Harbour

Spencer Harbour lies between Drumkeeran and Tarmon on the north-western shore of Lough Allen and is the northernmost of the Waterways Ireland moorings on the lake. Its name honours the 5th Earl Spencer, and it was once busy: in the 19th century up to 200 people worked here shipping bricks and iron, and local tradition holds that iron from Sliabh an Iarainn sent from here went into Dublin’s Ha’penny Bridge. Today Leitrim Tourism lists overnight moorings in the small marina and a picnic area by the water, with wide views across to the Iron Mountain; Waterways Ireland looks after the harbour. A slipway was approved in 2020 but was still waiting to go to tender in early 2025, so do not count on it. Drumkeeran, a few kilometres away, holds a traditional music festival each June in honour of the flute player John McKenna and a family festival in August.
