About Cong

Cong, Conga in Irish after St Feichín's 'narrows', stands on the neck of land between Lough Corrib and Lough Mask, which are linked by streams running underground. Its abbey was refounded for Augustinian canons in 1138 by the High King Turlough Mór O'Connor, and Rory O'Connor, the last High King, spent his final years there; nearby, the Monks' Fishing House stands on a small arch over the river. Much of John Ford's 1952 film The Quiet Man was shot on the Ashford Castle estate, the Guinness family's former home and a luxury hotel since 1939, and the village still celebrates it. The Cong Canal, dug between 1848 and 1854 to join the two lakes, was abandoned and is known as the Dry Canal. The 1859 navigation award ran to Cong Quay on the Cong River; today the public pier is at Lisloughrey, and cruises also leave from the castle pier.

  • Heritage

Cong Abbey and the Monks' Fishing House

The ruined Augustinian abbey refounded in 1138, a National Monument, and beside the river the monks' little stone fishing house with a trapdoor over the water.

  • Attraction

    The Quiet Man

John Ford's 1952 film with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara was largely shot around Ashford Castle, and Cong keeps the memory alive with its own fan club.

    The Dry Canal

The 5 km Cong Canal, dug from 1848 to link Lough Corrib and Lough Mask and abandoned in 1854; its water level rises and falls with the seasons.

  • Fishing

    Guided fishing from Ashford Castle

The castle's ghillie takes up to three anglers out after brown trout, salmon and pike, mostly in traditional 19 ft clinker-built wooden boats; boat and tackle cost €320 for three hours or €550 for seven (prices checked in October 2026).
